On 20 June 2017, the National Platform on ESD, Germany´s supreme steering body for the implementation of the Global Action Programme on ESD (GAP), has adopted the National Action Plan for GAP implementation. It defines 130 objectives and 349 measures to scale up ESD in all areas and at all levels of the German education system.
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research convenes a National Platform and advisory bodies in order to drive forward the implementation of the Global Action Programme on ESD in Germany: A scientific as well as an international adviser consult the work of the National Platform. Furthermore, six expert forums provide advice on ESD and the different levels of education. The expert forums cooperate with several partner networks, bringing together a wide group of stakeholders that are strong partners for action on the ground.
The phase of life between the ages of 15 and 25 marks the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. Vocational education and training or academic study, moving away from home, gaining financial independence having found our first job – this is the transitional period during which the paths of personal futures are paved. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers learners to take informed decisions and responsible actions for environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society, for present and future generations, while respecting cultural diversity.
How well has ESD been integrated into Germany’s education sectors so far and how can the progress made be checked? To answer these questions, a monitoring programme was developed by Professor Dr. Gerhard de Haan and the Global Action Programme project team working at Institut Futur at Freie Universität Berlin.
