Die Konferenz bot Gelegenheit, Perspektiven und konkrete Aktionen zur Umsetzung des neuen UNESCO Programms "BNE 2030" zu planen. Hierzu hatte die UNESCO ihre Mitgliedstaaten eingeladen, Delegationen zu nominieren. Gemeinsam diskutierten die internationalen Teilnehmenden der Konferenz über die Ausgestaltung von BNE in den kommenden zehn Jahren es wurde über den Stand der Entwicklungen in den jeweiligen Nationen berichtet. Die UNESCO Weltkonferenz lieferte neue Impulse, um BNE in Bildungspolitik und -praxis weiter zu stärken und die strategische Ausgestaltung des neuen Programms zu begleiten.

Zum Abschluss wurde die Berliner Erklärung (Berlin Declaration) (PDF, 455KB, Datei ist nicht barrierefrei)beschlossen. Bundesbildungsministerin Anja Karliczek erklärte dazu: "Wir als Ministerinnen und Minister aus der ganzen Welt senden mit unserer gemeinsamen Berliner Erklärung das Signal, dass wir noch stärkere Anstrengungen unternehmen wollen, damit Bildung für Nachhaltigkeit in jeden Bildungsbereich integriert wird: in die Lehrpläne, in außerschulische Bildungsaktivitäten, in die Lehrerausbildung. In Deutschland haben wir als weltweiter Vorreiter eine gute Startposition für die Umsetzung der Berliner Erklärung und des neuen UNESCO-Programms ‚Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung: die globalen Nachhaltigkeitsziele verwirklichen (BNE 2030)‘."
