ESD for 2030

In 2020, UNESCO has launched its new ESD programme "Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs (ESD for 2030)". In line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the programme runs until 2030.

ESD for 2030 - Towards Achieving the SDGs

With the extended programme, UNESCO supports the "Decade of Action" and contributes to accelerating sustainable solutions to all the world’s biggest challenges. "ESD for 2030" focuses on the interlinkages and tensions among different SDGs and provides learners with opportunities to practice balancing them. Many of the existing instruments, for example, the UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD and the five priority action areas (policy, education and training, educators, youth and communities), as well as the goal to implement ESD into the educational systems continue within the new framework. Nevertheless, there are numerous advancements as well, like the focus on psychological and social preconditions and the transformation of ESD into political mobilization.

"ESD for 2030" has been launched at an international conference organised by UNESCO and supported by the German Government as host. The conference provided impulses to further strengthen ESD in educational policy and practice and to accompany the strategic design of the new programme. It took place from May 17th - 19th, 2021 in Berlin. In addition, a National Launch Conference was the kick off for the programme in Germany.

To support Member States in implementing the UNESCO Framework for the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) beyond 2019 and its Roadmap, and to follow up on the Berlin Declaration on Education to Sustainable Development (May 2021), UNESCO is establishing the new ESD for 2030 Global Network.

The ESD for 2030 roadmap

The ESD for 2030 roadmap sets out the urgent challenges facing the planet and underlines the implementation of the "Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs (ESD for 2030)" framework, which aims to increase the contribution of education to building a more just and sustainable world. It outlines actions in five priority action areas on policy, learning environments, building capacities of educators, youth and local level action, stressing further ESD’s key role for the successful achievement of the 17 SDGs and the big great individual and societal transformation required to address the urgent sustainability challenges.

Learning to change the world! What is Education for Sustainable Development?

How do we want to live in the future? What and how do we need to learn to make that future possible? How, where and what can we learn in order to actively shape the sustainable transformation ourselves? Global challenges affect us all and can be resolved jointly. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) provides answers to these questions.

Video series: Living ESD

The German UNESCO Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research present the video series "BNE Leben" (Living ESD). The video series shows examples of successful ESD implementation from Germany.
