It is crucial for the success of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development that the Decade and activities be visible. The best way to achieve this is to group together the numerous contributions to Education for Sustainable Development and present them as a whole to the general public. The German National Committee for the UN Decade has for the first time proclaimed nationwide Education for Sustainable Development Days of Action for the period from the 19th to 28th September 2008.

Many different Education for Sustainable Development events took place in numerous locations throughout Germany. Contributions to the Days of Action range from exhibitions or podium discussions via open-door days to smaller events.

Official launch of the 2008 days of action: At the invitation of the city of Bonn and the German Commission for UNESCO, the official launch of the 2008 days of action took place at the Old City Hall in Bonn on 19th September 2008 at 7pm. Around 200 guests were in attendance as Bärbel Dieckmann, Lord Mayoress of the City of Bonn, Prof. Gerhard de Haan, Chairman of the German National Committee for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and Dieter Offenhäußer, the General Secretary of the German Commission for UNESCO's representative, fired the starting shot for the days of action. In addition to other programme points, recognition was also awarded to new Official Decade Projects.

In 2009 the Days of Action will take place from the 18th to 27th September.
