The German National Committee for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development declared cultural diversity the annual theme for 2007. In this regard, particular focus was given to closely relating to the guiding principle of sustainability, i.e. on integrating an ecological, economic, social, cultural and political dimension in designing sustainable societies.
Cultural diversity can be seen as the goal of humane sustainable development of humanity and therefore is a value in itself. Cultural diversity opens up myriad different courses of action that can forestall the slide into a homogeneous world. The latter would irrefutably lead to curtailed freedoms for the individual. Cultural diversity, just like sustainable development, lays the foundations for humane globalisation.
Cultural diversity must also be regarded as a resource that helps us find solutions for our hitherto unsustainable lifestyle. Looking at different ways of living and cultural spheres can lead to new knowledge as to how to overcome both societal and individual problems. Cultural diversity therefore needs to be seen as a fundamental pillar for the sustainability of each and every society.
