The German National Committee for the UN Decade has set annual themes for the upcoming Decade years. The objective of the annual themes is to focus the activities of Decade participants better, to attract new partners and make ESD issues more publicity friendly.
The annual themes should not be seen as an exclusion criterion. Activities with a different focus to the respective annual theme are certainly still possible and welcome.
The following annual themes have been established:
2007: Cultural diversity
2008: Water
2009: Energy
2010: Money
2011: City
2012: Food
2013: Mobility
2014: No single theme, allowing for a general conclusion in the final year, summarising the previous themes and prospects
2009: Energy
To underscore the particular importance of energy to Education for Sustainable Development, the German National Committee that was convened by the German Commission for UNESCO to implement the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development selected "energy" as the annual theme for 2009.
