Hamburg Senate launched the "Hamburg Learns Sustainability" initiative in May 2005. It uses a logo to promote integration of the guiding principle of sustainable development in all areas of education. A Hamburg Plan of Action is produced annually with a comprehensive range of measures and a results-based assessment is carried out. A round table is held to consult civil society stakeholders. All outcomes are published online and are publicised in other media as well. Hamburg is a committed member of the "North German Partnership to Support the UN Decade (NUN)". Hamburg's activities are listed in its own entry in the UN Decade National Plan of Action catalogue of measures. 16 projects from Hamburg have been recognised as official Decade Projects since the beginning of the UN Decade.
Examples of outstanding individual projects are the BIBB model test "HaBiNa – Technical Training and Further Education in a Sustainability Network" or the "Children Cooks – Experience Natural Foods!" project.
