The Frankfurt city council meeting on 28th February 2008 voted to take part in the UN ESD Decade to pool existing education programmes with regard to education for sustainability and to develop new proposals. The "Fit for the future – learning how to be sustainable in Frankfurt" project, which began in 2008, established a forward-looking network. It aims to help further develop courses on offer in terms of sustainability, pool activities and provide impetus for new projects. In keeping with the guiding principle of life-long learning, the target groups are city residents of all age groups. Stakeholders from traditional educational institutions like schools and from the informal learning sector, such as clubs, initiatives or companies, were encouraged to collaborate. An educational programme on the UN Decade topics of "water" and "energy" was brought out in the 2008/2009 pilot phase.
