The goal of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is to embed sustainable development principles in education throughout the world. This can only be done by involving all stakeholders. Recognising ESD initiatives places these concerns centre-stage. The German National Committee for the UN Decade awards recognition to official Decade Projects to reward examples of good practice and create models worthy of imitation for other projects.

Successful and innovative projects in Education for Sustainable Development have the opportunity to apply for recognition as an "Official German Project for the UN Decade". These awards help make the Decade's concerns more visible throughout Germany. Concomitant to this, the awards also support the local individual ESD stakeholders. This has so far occurred in a way that has surpassed all expectations. More than 1.500 Official Decade Projects and 14 municipalities have already received this recognition since the beginning of the Decade. Recognition is given for two years in all cases.

Recognition is given to

  • Official German Projects of the UN Decade
  • Contributions to the UN Decade
  • Cities and Local Authorities of the UN Decade
  • Official Measures of the UN Decade
