"Stadt-Sand-Fluss" is a project for the sustainable conservation of endangered sand habitats in the city of Nuremberg. It aims to conserve, maintain and develop the sand habitats which are so typical and characteristic of the city area, which are, however, rapidly disappearing. Since they serve as retreat areas the project also contributes to conserving biodiversity. Moreover, it aims to preserve the function of sand biotopes as recreational areas for the city’s population. These conservation, maintenance and development aims are achieved by means of landscape conservation measures and an accompanying nature education program which combines nature experience and learning. The elements of this program are excursions geared to specific target groups, teaching in schools, teacher training, creative projects for city dwellers and nature conservation and landscape conservation measures.

New topics and new target groups have been added since the project was first awarded the status of a Decade Project in 2007/2008. The need to treat our soil in an environmentally friendly way, in particular with respect to land consumption and conservation of cultural landscapes, is increasingly being recognized. In particular, teachers are showing an increased interest in including this issue in their classes. In addition, the City of Nuremberg adopted this project as a lead project within its sustainability strategy.
