Awareness Raising for the Protection of Tropical Rainforests

Federal Land: Bavaria

Award Period: 2007/2008

The project "Awareness Raising for the Protection of Tropical Rainforests" supports the activities of the City of Munich and civil society’s commitment within the alliance for climate protection, "Munich Protects the Rainforest". This is done by means of public relations and educational work. The project is directly coordinated with the Asháninka people (60,000 people in the central Peruvian rainforest), in such a way that the affected persons speak up for themselves. We do not talk “about” them or spread myths, nor do we focus on collecting donations so they automatically appear to be beggars. The teaching materials are prepared on the basis of the criteria of Global Learning / Education for Sustainable Development. They provide a basis for empathy, they explain the background to the currently difficult situation, they place co-operation in the overall context of climate protection, protection of the Amazonian rainforest, the alliance for climate protection of European cities with peoples of the tropical rainforests, etc. The teaching material is part of the process "think global – act local"; we try to show how important, rich and worth protecting the rainforest is and that it can only be protected by the indigenous people living there through their culture and their way of life. The most important activities are listed below: up to now there were three information journeys of several weeks. The Asháninka delegates travelled to Munich and participated in many discussions at schools, in official events, in big events etc. Other activities are the preparation of various brochures and materials.
