The German National Committee
The implementation of the UN Decade is coordinated by a National Committee convened by the German Commission for UNESCO. The Committee represents Federal and State ministries, the Parliament, non-governmental organisations, the media, the private sector and the scientific community and is chaired by the educational scientist Prof. Gerhard de Haan (Free University of Berlin). The National Committee is supported by a Secretariat in Bonn and an office in Berlin, set up with the financial assistance of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Sustainability stakeholders from all over Germany come together once a year at a Round Table event to work on the implementation of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in Germany. Representatives from Federal, State and Municipality level are involved, as are non-governmental organisations. Between sessions, the Working Groups set up by the Round Table contribute to the implementation of the Decade.

Working Groups
The Working Groups draw up concrete proposals to embed the guiding principle of sustainable development in the respective educational areas. Another important task of the Working Groups is to publicise the activities in Germany. In this regard, the Working Groups support the German National Committee in selecting outstanding projects that are suitable as vehicles for and applications of Education for Sustainable Development. These outstanding projects may then be awarded the status as an Official Decade Project.
