World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development
Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade
31 March – 2 April 2009, Bonn, Germany

The "World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development – Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade" was held in Bonn, Germany, from 31 March to 2 April 2009. Organizers of the conference were UNESCO and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in cooperation with the German Commission for UNESCO. 700 participants from all world regions will come together at the Bonn Conference.

Five years into the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, for which UNESCO is the lead agency, the conference aimed to highlight the relevance of ESD to all of education; promote international exchange on ESD, especially between countries of the North and the South; carry out a stock-taking of the implementation of the UN Decade and develop strategies for the way ahead.

Workshop – Education for Sustainable Development in Africa

Within its partnership programme, the German Commission for UNESCO held a workshop with African National Commissions for UNESCO in Bonn and Berlin from 1 to 11 June 2008. Secretary-Generals and staff members of National Commissions from Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Namibia and Rwanda participated. An entire day of the workshop was devoted to the UN Decade "Education for Sustainable Development".

At the extraordinary meeting of the German Round Table of the UN Decade Education for Sustainable Development on 21 Mai 2008 German ESD actors discussed the World Conference "Education for Sustainable Development".

World Conference First meeting of the International Advisory Group

For the first time, members of the International Advisory Group to the "UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development: Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade" will come together on 21 and 22 April 2008 in Berlin, Germany. The 14 international high-ranking experts on education will discuss the conference format, program and its overall objectives. The conference itself will take place from 31 March until 2 April 2009 in Bonn, Germany.

Report on the panel discussion on World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

Within the framework of UNESCO's Executive Board in Paris the Parliamentary State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research Andreas Storm and UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education Nicholas Burnett presented, on 14 April 2008, the World Conference Education for Sustainable Development. Some 150 representatives of UNESCO Member States attended the panel discussion.

Panel discussion on ESD World Conference

On 14 April 2008, the Permanent Delegation of Germany to UNESCO and UNESCO will organize a panel discussion on the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (31 March - 2 April 2009, Bonn, Germany) at UNESCO Headquarters on the occasion of the 179th Executive Board session. At the event, the main objectives of the conference will be presented – a review of what has been achieved throughout the first five years of the UN Decade and the development of strategies for further promoting education for sustainable development worldwide.
