Sustainable School Buildings: Concept to Reality

01.10. - 02.10.09

Ort: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Sustainable architecture extends beyond energy efficiency and green buildings. It incorporates the values of economic viability, social justice and ecological preservation in all stages of the planning, design, construction and maintenance of buildings and facilities in creating school buildings of the 21st century. School buildings created and operated under these principles can not only reduce their environmental impact but also by provide a valuable platform for teaching students about these pressing issues.

To create lasting places and spaces in schools demands an architecture that supports education, the school’s vision and the needs of the individual as they change and develop. However, creating this sustainable architecture involves navigating a range of different challenges including conflicting policies and legislation, as well as the practical needs of the school, community and education in general.

This conference will focus on the process of how sustainable architecture is realised in schools given legislative obstacles, budgetary constraints and other policy challenges. Using physical examples, the conference will also demonstrate how school premises are created and conceptualised to encourage responsible and conscientious behaviours, engage students in and promote awareness of environmental, social and economic concerns.
