Christoph Wulf: Education for sustainable development and cultural diversity

Education for sustainable development is one of the major future goals of mankind. It concerns all people and is therefore a common task of all systems of education. It can however only succeed, if the cultural diversity, which exists amongst the different societies of the world and which has evolved throughout historical development is considered. Should it not be possible to relate the general objectives linked to education for sustainable development to regional and local circumstances, education for sustainability will remain unknown to people in many regions around the world and will not be realised. The way in which general objectives can be combined with the regional and local intentions is the central problem of educational for sustainability.

Max Fuchs: Sustainability and development from the cultural and educational policy viewpoint

The "UNESCO-agreement on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions", commonly known as the "Convention on Cultural Diversity", has been in force since May 2007. Since Germany has also ratified this convention, it is now time to fill the agreement with life. This involves reflection on the part of the institutions from the communal and federal state levels up to the federal level, on the respective significance of "cultural diversity" and if the existing political instruments are sufficient to do justice to the obligation of its protection and promotion. The non-governmental organisations, organisations of civil society, non-profit making cultural institutions and societies or associations also have to review this for themselves and their own work.

Interview with Ivan Nogales

The social worker and drama teacher, Ivan Nogales is founder of the theatre group "Teatro Trono" and of the cultural centre COMPA in El Alto, Bolivia. While speaking to Ralf Classen, he talks about the significance of being intercultural as well as cultural diversity and sustainable development in theatre work with young people, in the school system and in teacher training efforts in Bolivia.

Karin Heyl: Cultural Diversity and Education for Sustainable Development – based on the experience of the CRESPO-Foundation

As an immigration country, Germany currently has to face up to a significant cultural diversity, which should be seen to be an opportunity because this cultural diversity will enable us to better stand our ground with regard to global competition; this is something that big companies like to point out. It also represents a resource for achieving sustainable solutions to the pressing social and ecological questions.

Michaela Abdelhamid: The Euro-Mediterranean Youth Parliament – cultural diversity in practice

How are entity and diversity compatible in a global world? The diversity of the human being is reflected in the most varied individual and cultural expressions. Understanding on an inter-personal as well as an interstate level can only be achieved via communicative processes of understanding. The will to listen to the view of the other person and the knowledge of cultural, historical and social backgrounds are therefore a pre-requisite. Education is the key to this skill of differentiated thinking and action.

Dirk Frank: Heterogeneity as a chance – education with digital media

Heterogeneity can only succeed if people with a history of migration can participate in society and education. Media opportunities pave the way from homogeneity to heterogeneity in education. The association "Schulen ans Netz" (Schools Online) wants to make a contribution to promoting speaking and media competence as well as intercultural learning. The association wants to use the potential of digital media for a modern teaching and learning culture.

Samuel Fleiner: The exhibition "Art in climate change" – a virtual guided tour with the curator

For me cultural diversity, in a narrower sense, means artistic expression as a whole:  acting, music, visual arts, design including everything in-between. I understand architecture as being the design of buildings; cabaret, pantomime or comedy as drama. Cultural diversity incorporates various social levels, ethnics and origins. Cultural diversity means, in its entirety, the diversity of humans coping with existence as a whole: that is the way in which humans communicate in different cultures, the way they live, eat, sleep, build, move on, what they believe in and how they mould their social relationships and their relationship to the natural environment.
