Since environmental education (EE) was defined internationally at the first UNESCO-UNEP sponsored conference on EE held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1977, international leaders and practitioners have gathered every decade in Moscow in 1987 and in Thessaloniki in 1997, to take stock of the progress and to set new goals for advancing the field. The fourth such Conference, co-sponsored by UNESCO and UNEP, is being organized by the Government of India at the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), the nodal agency for the Conference. The main Conference is being held in Ahmedabad on 26, 27 and 28 November 2007, with pre Conference workshops beginning 24 November 2007.

The Conference will be the ideal forum for environmental educators and communicators from various arenas to take part in plenary sessions and workshops around diverse thematic areas to analyze and assess approaches for improvement. Being held during the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD 2005-2014), the Conference will also look at how EE and ESD can partner and strengthen each other towards building a sustainable future and set up a global agenda for progress through the Decade.

The Conference will have Plenary sessions, Thematic Workshops, Exhibitions, Poster Sessions and Side Events which include Book Launches, Live Craft Demonstrations, Special Lectures and Film Screenings, to address the wide range of thematic issues. The plenary sessions will feature presentations by leading experts on EE and ESD as well as presentations on the regional status of DESD initiatives by UNESCO and various governments. Thirty thematic areas have been identified for the discussion at the Conference. Each of these areas reflecting the EE and ESD concerns and issues that have evolved over the last 30 years since, will be discussed in workshops. Each thematic workshop will take stock of its specific area of concern in the context of ESD and identify the role of EE within it. The workshops will also review and reformulate EE in the context of the DESD. Details on online registration for the event. Early Bird Registration ends August 31, 2007.
